Exposures to bio-aerosols in industries such as recycling and waste handling are associated with a wide range of health effects.

Exposure limits have been proposed for some but not all elements of bio-aerosol. Risk assessment is hampered by the lack of validated quantitative exposure assessment methods. Further research is required, but in the meantime occupational hygiene and health and safety professionals are called upon to make a judgement on risk and give advice on controls.
