Date: 3 September 2019

Time: 13:00 – 16:00

Venue: Raven Suite, Chateau Impney, Bromsgrove Road, Droitwich Spa, WR9 0BN

Programme: PPE and the Construction Industry. In light of the recent HSE construction health inspection initiatives, we will be talking about ‘’PPE and the Construction Industry’’.

Speakers: George Elliott, Senior Application Engineer within the 3M Personal Safety Division and Andrew Simpson from the HSE.

George will be talking about how to improve PPE compliance. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is only effective if the right PPE is selected and it is worn properly during all periods of exposure, but it is not uncommon to see workers remove or misplace their PPE. There are a number of different reasons for this and ensuring compliance can be a significant challenge for health and safety professionals. He will:

• Discuss the human behaviours that lead to non-compliance
• Explain how the PPE selection process can help to improve compliance
• Provide hints and tips for engaging workers

A focus on hazards in the construction industry. Recent HSE statistics revealed that annually in the UK around 80,000 construction workers were suffering from an illness they believed was caused or made worse by their work. Amongst musculoskeletal disorders and skin conditions, the construction industry also had the largest number of occupational cancer registrations across industries. With this in mind, there is a concerted effort in the sector to increase awareness of construction hazards and the control measures which can be implemented, George will:

• Highlight common hazards on construction sites
• Discuss the control measures that might be implemented
• Explain how to select suitable and adequate PPE
• Provide hints and tips for education and training

Andrew has worked with the HSE Science Division since 1989, initially as an analytical chemist and latterly as an occupational hygienist. Recent work has covered grain dust, carbon monoxide from charcoal cooking, wood pellets, foundry fume, brick making and wood dust.

His presentation will report on a recent twenty-two site HSE occupational hygiene survey of wood dust exposure in manufacturing, relevant now with the forthcoming planned reduction in the WEL for hardwood dust. Visits were made to sawmills, joineries, furniture manufacturers and boat builders. Long term exposures were measured as well as task specific exposures relating to cleaning and maintenance tasks, and working practices and control measures were examined. A follow-up telephone survey of the health and safety managers and supervisors was performed to determine how HSE can support SMEs to better manage exposures to wood dust.

CPD:  This meeting will count towards CPD.
